Artivism
As a person with a learning disability, there are countless times that I can’t access the words I need to verbally express my thoughts, especially when they are emotionally charged. Ideas in word form will often feel like an avalanche ready to spill all at once the second my lips part. When I create anything, through photography, through collage, woodburning, poetry, or whatever medium I choose in that moment, ideas can co-exist in the same space, woven together like a tapestry where my thoughts are complementary instead of competing for priority presentation. That, in itself, is healing, and helps me honor each feeling as a source of empowerment instead of burden. I create art to connect with the world and myself.
